If you realize your life is boring when someone asks what you like to do for fun, consider it a reality check and reflect on it.

Start by asking, what is fun? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, fun is enjoyment, amusement, lighthearted pleasure. To further clarify or confuse, these words are defined differently by each individual. And, as we grow, mature, and age, the definition for fun changes, as it should.

Retirement is envisioned as 24/7 fun, fun, fun, but too much fun, especially if it’s fun, as defined by you when you were working - socializing, exercising, relaxing - after a while, (time varies for individuals) may become boring.  As a full time worker, the focus of fun was on releasing stress from working your job. In retirement filling your day with socializing, exercising, and relaxing, when your stress level is greatly reduced already becomes just that - filling your day.  Spending that last third of your life ‘filling your day’ will leave you feeling empty and bored, when you should be exhilarated.  After all, you have anticipated retirement all your life, expecting to fully enjoy it.  There is a prescription for that - make something!

To create is to exhilarate - a natural high!  Start by thinking about your definition of fun. (There can be more than one). Then ask yourself, “How can I change it up?”  You like to eat out?  Go to an ethnically different restaurant that you have ever tried before. You prefer cooking? Try a new recipe and invite someone whom  you want to get to know better to share it with you. (Sharing your creative endeavors enhances the high!)  Alter your exercise routine - make sure there is some outdoor time.  You have a dream to learn a foreign language, play an instrument, write a book, learn something new?  Do it!  Research your topic on Google.  Watch it on YouTube.  You will be on your way to guaranteed fun. It is never too late to be creative.  Make something! It doesn’t have to be beautiful or perfect, but make sure it fits in your definition of fun; it's benefit is doubled, if it is something new for you, that you have always been interested in or curious about. Find a creative outlet that matches your personality.  It's a drug you can't live without.

Advice whether or not you ask:  If you don’t maximize computer technology, make that your first stop on this venture to increase your fun. The world is at your fingertips with Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and new developments every day. Get on board now. and you will be in touch with the world for the rest of your life.

Thanks for sharing the article, and more importantly, your personal experience of mindfully using our emotions as data about our inner state and knowing when it’s better to de-escalate by taking a time out are great tools. Appreciate you reading and sharing your story since I can certainly relate and I think others can to
